Hand Breast Heart – Kollektiv in Residence
September, 2024

The artist, flâneuse, and situationist Nina Berfelde held a residency at Co-Making Matters in Berlin. Her time there unfolded as a living laboratory for thoughts and walks, exploring themes such as shadow, awareness, and coincidence. The residency brought together a wide range of guests from diverse backgrounds, collectively transforming the space and its surroundings into a playful séance reflecting on present, past, and future conditions. Throughout the residency, a series of experimental “walkshops” and gatherings were held. These activities blurred the boundaries between public intervention, artistic exploration, and communal reflection.

Program Overview:

September 4 – Sunset Walk

Participants traced light and shadow with chalk, tuning into the rhythms of the approaching equinox. The walk made temporalities visible and questioned both the obvious and the invisible through improvised movements in the 2 km vicinity of Haus der Statistik.

September 6 & 7 – Hand Breast Heart Collective Takeover
Over two days, Co-Making Matters was transformed by the Hand Breast Heart collective, who improvised with space, messages, echoes, and participant interaction. This intimate gathering invited up to eight participants to share grief and joy, express thoughts through scenic readings, and make gentle interventions in the surrounding neighborhood.

September 9 – Radical-Associative Geography Walk
Led by Dr. Alexandra Appel, this walk experimented with chance as a method. Using dice to determine direction, participants navigated a spontaneous route through the urban landscape. The exercise explored associative thinking and non-linear geography within a 2 km radius of the Haus der Statistik.

September 12 – Finde-Walk
In this sensory and conceptual exploration of space, each participant brought a small object (e.g., stone, branch, poem) and exchanged it during the walk for something found along the way. The walk investigated circularity, perception, and the mutual gifting between humans and space. With participant consent, found items were photographically documented.

September 15 – Finissage
The residency concluded with a special finissage at Co-Making Matters. Without formal registration or fixed agenda, it created an open space for exchange, celebration, and gifting, reflecting the spontaneous and participatory ethos of the residency.
