Exhibition
Loss / disappearance / transformation
by Anna Dial

March 4–8, 2025

“Loss / disappearance / transformation” is a visual narrative drawn from Anna Dial’s diary, created during a time of forced exile. The works on display emerged from experiences across Germany, Montenegro, and Serbia, shaped during the artist’s temporary residencies in each place. The exhibition includes a rich combination of graphics, ceramics, and textiles, alongside a limited edition comic book for both children and adults.

A central thread in the exhibition is the transformation of self through displacement. As the artist describes:

“In one’s nomadic life, a mirror and comb are objects that you always carry along. They become symbols of your search in a new space. But you can no longer see your reflection in the mirror – the familiar self dissolves in the changing flow. These inevitable transformations, like the imago of a butterfly, make you become different every time. You put on a costume of ‘heart’ or ‘strawberry’, embrace a strong swan, ride a friend horse and try to feel love and kindness. Maybe one day somewhere you will find home.”

The artist also worked with homemade traditional German textile napkins, onto which she embroidered — in a non-native language — the first words she associated with the idea of “home.” This gesture echoes the personal, linguistic, and material layers of belonging and transformation that mark the project.
